At the beginning of the year, I started a crafting blog elsewhere. I might move things over here, though, just to keep everything centralized. What do you think?

I have so many good memories from the times I spent on the campus of Northern Illinois University. Yesterday’s shootings disturb me.
During the summer after my sophomore year of high school (hard to believe that was 21 years ago this summer!), I spent a week on campus at J-Camp, a summer camp for high school students who had aspirations of working in journalism or related fields. I met a lot of great people and garnered a ton of hands-on experience in newspaper writing and layouts. I stayed on campus, ate in the campus cafeteria (and made a great squirrel sculpture out of some clay-like mashed potatoes, studded with hard green peas and colored with brown gravy), and had several late nights with my new friends. Because of that experience, I got a job writing an opinion column in a local chain of newspapers.
I can’t remember the exact years or competitions, but I know that I participated in multiple high school math team competitions on the NIU campus. (These might have been the regional competitions.) I know I’ve been in Cole Hall, where the recent shootings took place, as part of that experience. It gives me chills when I think about it.
Later, in college, I participated in interchapter activities (service projects, socials) with the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity chapter there. After college, I helped revitalize the chapter by providing recruitment and other support for them.
I can’t even begin to imagine what it’s like to be at NIU right now. All I can do is post their ribbon here, in support of that wonderful college community.

School ended in mid-June. I had a great first year (IMO, anyway) and have terrific memories to keep with me always.
I have found work at a small, locally-owned, non-profit at which I will be teaching computer skills to people in Maine. I’m optimistic that I’ll be doing something worthwhile and beneficial to our community with this company, and I cannot wait to get started!
Steve and I have also visited several places around the state in the six weeks, including:

Canada..

Kingsbrae Garden in St. Andrews by the Sea, New Brunswick..

Campobello Island..

Roque Bluffs State Park..

Pembroke..

Rockland Harbor..

and Boyd Lake.
Yeah, we get around.
I hope to have more photos and adventures before returning to work. Time will tell!
